How often have you seen a homeless person sleeping in a door frame on Main Street or begging on the corner of Rodd? Have you seen a tent city at Grove Park? Or someone standing in the road at Saginaw and Eastman with a sign asking for money? Those are images we’re used to in New York and Los Angeles but that’s not what homelessness looks like here.
In Midland County, homelessness looks like a mom and a young child living in her car. Or a family with one adult with serious health issues. The other has a job that pays enough for food, electricity, and gas to get to work but it isn’t enough to cover the rent, so it doesn’t get paid. Or like someone who can’t find housing since the availability of affordable rentals in Midland County doesn’t come close to meeting the need. These are real examples.
Home to Stay Housing Assistance Center promotes self-sufficiency to Midland County residents in need of safe, stable housing and support services. We are a United Way agency and the central point of intake for high-need individuals and families facing eviction and homelessness, as appointed by the state.
At any given time, 28% of households in Midland County are struggling to make ends meet. During COVID our caseload grew by 50%. And now with record inflation, the struggle to find a secure place to live continues to get even more difficult. The need is REAL and URGENT in Midland County.
This is where Home to Stay comes in. We help people find housing if they lose their homes, and as importantly we provide funding, home repair and other services to help keep them safe at home before eviction hits.
Our annual fundraiser, this year themed “Welcome Home” to remind us of the warmth and comforts of home, will be Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 11:30-1:00, at the Midland Country Club, and includes a complimentary lunch.
Will you help us make “WELCOME HOME” a phrase that every Midland County resident can hear?
