We are designated by the State of Michigan as the Housing Assessment and Resource Agency (HARA) for Midland County, making us a recognized central point of intake for high-need individuals and families facing eviction or homelessness.

OUR STORY
In 1969, 10 local churches saw a need for a coordinated response to housing issues of low-income, senior and disabled residents. They pooled their resources and ideas around a central mission of providing housing assistance to those in need and Midland Area Homes was established. In 2018, the organization rebranded to Home To Stay Housing Assistance Center to capture our passion and goals for the Midland County community.

Home To Stay works towards its mission through the implementation of key programs like the Home Repair program, which aims to enhance the safety and accessibility of homes by helping to fund health- and safety-related repairs for seniors and income-eligible Midland County residents. These repairs can include accessibility and bathroom modifications, windows repairs, furnace and hot water heater repairs, minor plumbing or electrical repairs, and roofing repairs. Another program at Home To Stay is the Homeless Prevention program which includes case management, rental assistance, advocacy, housing resource information and referrals. A third critical support program is the Furniture Redistribution program, which recognizes that furniture needs can arise at any time.
We hope you'll consider donating to us today as your support can help us continue to meet the housing needs in our community. Home To Stay and the Midland County community appreciate your support for these important programs!

Patrick a. Czerwinski
board president Why I serve: Having spent the majority of my career working in legal proceedings involving child abuse and neglect, I have witnessed the profoundly negative effect housing insecurity can have on children and families. These experiences have shown me that, simply put, the work of an agency like Home To Stay is essential to the continued prosperity of our community. I am proud to serve on the board and assist in any capacity I can. Patrick joined the board in 2021. Robert Boerner
board member Why I Serve: The reason why I serve is helping people is a huge passion of mine. I have a true care to help people that are in need. Home to Stay does such a great job in serving our community. It’s a true honor to be to give back and serve on the Board. Robert joined the board in 2024. monica harper
board member Why I Serve: I have served as the Director of Finance and Operations for Shelterhouse here in Midland since 2017. Shelterhouse and Home To Stay are partner agencies and work together often. When I was invited to join the board in 2024, I jumped at the opportunity. The services that Home To Stay provides to the Midland community are especially important and quite often vital to the success of the clients we serve at Shelterhouse. I am grateful for the ability to serve on the Home To Stay board and contribute to the success of such a valuable community agency as well as partner agency. Monica joined the board in 2024. |
Melissa Cockrell
Board member Why I Serve: I have friends and family who have benefitted from the various services offered by Home to Stay, and I have seen firsthand the positive, life-changing impact this organization has had on them. While many people must navigate multiple agencies for support, Home to Stay breaks down that barrier, and provides a wide range of services in one location. This organization is a vital resource for our community, and I want to contribute to fostering stability and safety for those who need it. Melissa joined the board in 2024. Kevin Shaughnessy
board member Why I Serve: I am involved in several volunteer organizations focused on supporting others; Midland Kiwanis, Blessed Sacrament Church, Midland area nonprofits, and Central American Mission. I’ve been involved in the HTS furniture program for 10+ years and now am pleased to advocate more broadly for the mission to help eliminate homelessness. Joined the board in 2024. |
jim Bellor
Board Treasurer Why I Serve: My experience with Home to Stay has given me a deeper understanding of the challenges of homelessness in our community. I'm proud to contribute to an organization that brings stability and hope to families during their most difficult times. Jim joined the board in 2022. Amanda Confer
Board Member Why I Serve: I believe strong communities depend on the care we offer to one another and that everyone deserves a place to feel safe. For those friends and neighbors experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness, the experience can be isolating. The staff changes their lives, helping navigate the resources and showing care without stigma or judgment. Our clients' experience with Home to Stay is an important first step to help them feel supported and included in our community while putting them back on a path toward self-sufficiency. Amanda joined the board in 2024. Rob taylor
board secretary Why I Serve: I was raised by a hardworking mother that sacrificed everything to make sure her two children had everything they ever needed. It was not until I was older that I realized what that sacrifice was. To be a vehicle repair or doctor visit away from not being able to make rent or buy groceries is a way of life for so many in our community. This personal connection ignited my passion for helping others achieve stability and independence. Home to Stay it is a hand up when you get knocked down, to guide you on your path to self-sufficiency. Rob joined the board in 2023. |
